AUBURN – Yusuf Iman scored a game-high 29 points as Edward Little handed Brewer its first loss of the season, 74-68, in a KVAC boys’ basketball tilt Saturday.
Thanks in part to three Brandon Giguere 3-pointers on three straight second quarter possessions, EL led by seven at halftime, 40-33. Brewer cut the deficit to four going into the fourth quarter, but the Eddies, helped by some great defense by Tim Mains and the return of all-conference center James Philbrook (four points), maintained the lead to the final buzzer.
Bowen Leary had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Eddies (4-1). Dom Drake led the Witches (5-1) with 26 points while Nate Carson added 16 points.
Poland 54, Fryeburg 52
FRYEBURG – Nate Williams stole the ball with six seconds left to help Poland stave off a furious Fryeburg Academy comeback in a 54-52 triumph Saturday.
Poland outscored Fryeburg, 18-1, in the second quarter to take a 33-20 lead at halftime. But the Knights still needed Williams’ late theft to improve to 3-2. Fryeburg dropped to 1-4.
Logan Nichols and Kyle MacVane each dropped four 3-pointers apiece en route to 15 and 14 points, respectively. Mike Littlefield added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights. Colby Locke led the Raiders with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Mt. Blue 57, Oxford Hills 45
FARMINGTON – Eric Berry scored a game-high 15 points and added eight assists and five steals to pace Mt. Blue to a 57-45 triumph over Oxford Hills.
The Cougars slowly increased the margin, leading 9-8, 21-17 and 41-33 at the quarter breaks. Ryan Backus, Scott Berry and Cam Sennick each chipped in with nine points apiece for Mt. Blue (3-2).
Jake Hall scored 11 points to lead the Vikings. Matt Verrier and Cody Hadley added eight points apiece.
Lake Region 64, Gray-NG 52
GRAY – Zach Tomkinson drained a team-high 22 points to lead Lake Region to a 64-52 victory over Gray-New Gloucester.
The Lakers (4-2) jumped out to a 17-4 first-quarter lead, and improved their advantage to 33-20 at the midpoint. Matt Langadas contributed 15 points for Lake Region.
The Patriots (3-3) closed the gap to within six points in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers added a little steam down the stretch to pull away before the final buzzer.
Adam Jensen notched a game-high 23 points, including four 3-pointers, while senior center Taylor Valente chipped in with 16 points.
Hockey
Thornton 4, St. Dom’s 1
LEWISTON – C.J. Maksut scored a pair of goals to lead Thornton to a 4-1 victory over St. Dom’s in boys’ hockey action.
The Trojans (4-0) built a 4-0 lead by the end of the second period.
Kyle Holtet scored the lone goal for the Saints (2-1) at 12:40 of the final period. Cam Brown and Shawn O’Connell assisted on the goal.
Shayne Curtis faced 41 shots in the St. Dom’s goal.
Edward Little 5, Westbrook 1
AUBURN – Mat Gordon continues to put up quality points as he posted two goals and two assists for Edward Little in a 5-1 victory over Westbrook in the consolation game of the 16th annual Gippers’ Tournament.
The Red Eddies posted three goals in the first period and collected four before junior forward John Grondin spoiled the shutout with a tally in the 10th minute of the second period for the Blue Blazes.
Freshman defenseman Matt Berube chipped in with a goal and an assist for Edward Little.
Goalie Bobby Allen made 30 saves for Westbrook, while Rich Belanger turned back 27 to earn the win in net for EL.
Leavitt 5, Poland/Gray-New Gloucester 1
AUBURN – Junior forward Kevin Theiss recorded a pair of goals as Leavitt broke open the scoring in the second period en route to a 5-1 victory over Poland/Gray-New Gloucester in the championship game of the Gippers’ Tournament on Saturday.
The contest was well-balanced despite the story on the scoreboard. A physical game and the contributions from playmaker junior forward Josh Chouinard made all the difference. Chouinard scored the initial goal and assisted on both of the Hornet’s third-period tallies.
Junior forward Devin Goyette briefly tied the game at 1-1 at the 9:55 mark of the second period for the Patriotic Knights.
Goalie Matt Ouellette made 22 saves for Poland/Gray-New Gloucester, while Cody Violette turned away 21 to earn the win in net for Leavitt.
