DEAR SUN SPOTS: I hope you can help me. There were some ladies in Rumford who made a cookbook of all French dishes, and I didn’t pick one up. I was wondering if anyone had an extra copy I could buy or copy? I lost the number of the lady who organized it. I would so appreciate any help you can give me. Please call Ellen at 357-6733. I love this column. Never miss it. Thank you so much. — Ellen, Peru
ANSWER: I bet some readers can help you find that cookbook.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Routes 4 and 2 in Farmington, a short ways above the hospital, is the Family Fare Restaurant. I would like the recipe from the former owners for their house special. It was shrimp, scallops and mushrooms in a three-cheese sauce served over thin spaghetti. Hope you can locate this for me. Thanks. — Louise, Leeds
ANSWER: According to the young woman who answered the phone, the Family Fare Restaurant has been the Harvest House for three years. She knew nothing about the former owners. Perhaps a reader will be able to help?
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you locate the recipe for no-bake chocolate cookies from Marco’s Restaurant? They look as good as they taste. My many recipes haven’t. Also, Charlene’s hair salon has moved from its location in Mechanic Falls. Where did she go? Is she still at a hair salon? Thank you in advance, great column. — J.S., Auburn
ANSWER: Marco’s did not respond. Sun Spots can understand why. He wants you to come to him for those tasty cookies!
Readers, can you help with Charlene?
DEAR SUN SPOTS: My mother’s favorite candy is the peanut butter stix with jimmies that I used to get for her at Mary’s Candy Shop every Christmas. Since Mary’s closed, I have not been able to find them anywhere. Does anyone know if these candies are available anywhere? My mother is 91, and I would love to surprise her by having her favorite treat under the tree on Christmas morning. Thanks for the help. — Kate Clough, Rumford
ANSWER: Sun Spots apologizes for not getting to your question sooner so you could get an answer in time for Christmas. She tried some Portland stores with no luck. The Internet was not of much help either.
Fortunately, Mr. Sun Spots spent many years in Baltimore and referred Sun Spots to Rheb’s Homemade Candies, where they do have peanut butter stix, although with no mention of jimmies. Unfortunately, you probably won’t be able to get them in time for Christmas. Visit www.rhebcandy.com or call 410-644-4321.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: You’ve been a lot of help in the past. Please let us know where we can find the low-salt franks we used to buy at Shaw’s. They have been discontinued by them. Let us know where we can buy them. Thank you.
Also, we wrote a few weeks back to find out if PBS was going to show “Neighbor to Neighbor” again. We missed it, but hear about it. — L.G., Lewiston
ANSWER: Sun Spots spoke with Bruce at Shaw’s, who said low-sodium hot dogs are still available at the deli counter.
As for “Neighbor to Neighbor,” Sun Spots did answer your question. Filmmaker Craig Saddlemire of Roundpoint Movies said there has been interest in having it replayed, but nothing is scheduled for PBS yet. There are a couple of public showings coming up. One will be at Bates College on Martin Luther King Day; another is scheduled for Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.
