Norton B. Churchill
1911 – 2009
AUBURN — Norton B. Churchill, 98, of Roland Avenue, Lewiston, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, at The Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice.
He was born in Brookfield, Mo., Feb. 2, 1911, son of the late Merton G. and Monira N. Churchill. The family moved to Augusta in 1913 and to Auburn in 1916. He attended Augusta and Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School, Class of 1930.
He was a prominent drummer and tympani player, studying with the late Lew L. Barrett. Upon graduation, he was employed by the former T. A. Huston Biscuit Co., Charles Cushman Maine Biscuit Co. In 1933, he began a 38-year career with United Shoe Machinery Corp. in Auburn as an office clerk, then as a repair road man, and professional shoe maker, retiring in 1971.
He became a member of Ancient Brothers Lodge, No. 178, F&AM, 1932, Worthy Master 1936, District Deputy of the 23rd Masonic District, 1974-75. Past High Priest of Bradford Chapter, NO 9 RAM 1938 and secretary for 40 years. A member of Dunlap Council, NO 8, R & S M and Lewiston Commandery, No 6 KT. A Noble of Kora Temple A A O N M S percussionist and bass drummer in the Kora Band for more than 75 years.
He was a trustee of both the Auburn Masonic Assn. and Lewiston-Auburn Masonic Assn. having been secretary of both. He was Past Grand High Priest of the Grand Royal Arch of Maine for eight years, Grand Lecturer, member of the Finance Comm. and Grand Representative of the Grand Chapter of Utah. Past Sovereign of Eusebius Conclave, no. 3, Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine and Past Ill. Gr. Sov. KGC of the Imp. Grand Council of Maine.
He was united in marriage to Pauline A. Hatt on Oct. 20, 1934. She died Jan. 19, 1987. On Dec. 4, 1987, he married Ann G. Pushard.
He is survived by Ann, his wife of the past 22 years; his stepson, Craig Pushard and his wife, Jan; his stepdaughter, Joan Scollo and her husband, Bill; four grandsons, Matthew and Nathan Pushard, Christopher and Stephen Scollo; and two nephews, William and Stephen Verry.
Besides his parents and his first wife Pauline, he was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. R.M. “Marian” Verry.
