100 Years Ago: 1918

All of the public schools in Lewiston and Auburn, all churches, the theatres, societies, pool rooms, billiard parlors, business colleges and other public gathering places, except Bates College and wage-earning industries, have been ordered closed, beginning Friday morning until further notice. This action was taken by the boards of health of the two cities, following a meeting of the two mayors, members of the board of health and 14 local physicians in Mayor Lemaire’s office yesterday afternoon. It was practically the unanimous opinion of the physicians that such action be taken as a safe-guard against the spread of influenza.

50 Years Ago: 1968

Veronica Flynn, chairman of the Lewiston Board of Voter Registration, said today nearly 500 names have been added to the voting lists since the June primary. According to Mrs. Flynn, 496 new registrants will be eligible to vote in the presidential and municipal election in November for the presidential election. Mrs. Flynn said 47 names have been reinstated.

25 Years Ago: 1993

Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Bridgton, under the auspices of the Women’s Health Series, will offer reduced cost screening mammograms Oct. 11-29 in recognition of National Breast Center Awareness Month. The $55 fee covers the hospital charge and the radiologist interpretation. In addition to performing the screening, certified mammography technologists will give a training tape on monthly breast self-examination to each patient and provide easily-understood directions to guide the patient through self-examinations.
