CANTON — The Dam Core Committee met Monday night to finalize assignments for completing the $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for building a new dam on Whitney Brook, an outlet from Lake Anasagunticook.
The new dam would replace the temporary dam that was constructed last summer to maintain a proper level of water for the Canton Water District and for boating.
Kleinschmidt Engineering has submitted a final proposal for building the dam at $653,579. The town is applying for a $200,000 loan from Bangor Saving Bank to cover any remaining costs if the CDBG is received.
The town is also applying for a $50,000 grant from Bangor Savings to cover engineering costs for a new dam whether it is built by Kleinschmidt or the town.
The CDBG application is due on Jan. 22 and Chairman Malcolm Ray has asked that all assignments on the grant writing be turned in to Debbie Hutchins on Jan. 11. Hutchins, who is chairman of the Canton Water District, is applying for the grant.
Lake Anasagunticook is surrounded by waterfront properties that fall in the towns of Hartford and Canton. Hartford has been supportive of the dam project by allotting funds from the town and fundraising from the Lake Association, which includes Canton as well.
