PORTLAND — The wedding of Michelle Desrochers Rice and Dr. Umesh Chandra Sarma was held at 5 p.m. on Sept. 26 in the Regency Room of the Regency Hotel in Portland. Maine Supreme Court Justice Ellen Gorman officiated at the ceremony.

Mrs. Sarma is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bertrand Desrochers of Lewiston. Dr. Sarma is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bhupendra Sarma of London, England.

The bride, escorted down the aisle by her father, wore a strapless fitted gown of light gold satin, with champagne tulle and Chantilly lace overlay, asymmetrical dropped waist and sweep train. She carried a hand-tied bouquet of pale pink and champagne Sahara roses.

Suzanne Desrochers Albright, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Eliana “Lili” Albright, niece of the bride, was flower girl.

Dr. Remesh Sarma served as best man for his brother. Groomsmen were David Albright, brother-in-law of the bride, Dr. Mazen  Ghani, friend of the bridegroom, and David Desrochers, brother of the bride.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Atlantic Ballroom of the hotel. The couple’s first dance was a waltz choreographed by Margo Sullivan, their ballroom dance instructor. 

The couple honeymooned in Camden at the Norumbega Inn. They also traveled to Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India, and were married in a traditional Hindu ceremony, followed by a reception at the Mayfair Lagoon Resort on Jan. 6.

The bride is a 1982 graduate of St. Dominic Regional High School and is  a student at Central Maine Community College in the medical coding certificate program.

The bridegroom is a 1984 graduate of North Humberland Park School in London, England. He received his bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from Edinburgh University, Scotland in 1989. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Baystate Medical Center, Tufts University School of Medicine in Springfield, Mass., in June of 2002. He is employed by Spectrum Medical Group in diagnostic radiology at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

The couple resides in Auburn with their apricot poodle, Skipper.
