MEXICO — Global Positioning System devices for three police cruisers will help officers respond more quickly to calls, Chief Jim Theriault said.
The department received $2,403 from a federal Department of Homeland Security Justice Assistance Grant to buy the GPS units and replace a computer system used by the chief.
Theriault said the GPS units will help speed response times because they will show the shortest route to an address. He said they would also be helpful when his officers assist other police agencies in areas that are unfamiliar to them. The devices can also be used when police officers conduct all-terrain vehicle patrols.
The grant is part of a $35,000 award to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and town police departments in the county. Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said each town’s portion of the overall grant is based on the number of thefts, burglaries and domestic incidents that take place.
