AUBURN – The Central Maine Board of Approved Baseball Umpires (CMBABU) will be holding rules clinics for anyone interested in becoming a certified umpire. The CMBABU covers Sagadahoc, Androscoggin, Oxford, Franklin and parts of Cumberland counties. Levels of play include high school, junior high school, American Legion, Babe Ruth, Senior Baseball (men’s league), and Cal Ripken. Veteran umpires are encouraged to attend as well to brush up on the rules.
The clinics will be held at Edward Little High School at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 and March 1; at 11 a.m. March 7; and 5 p.m. March 14. The test will be given March 14. The sessions will last two hours. Rule books and case books will be made available at a cost of $8 each. If you are 17 years old or older and enjoy baseball, this is a great way to stay involved in the game while getting paid. Typical game fees are $50 to $75.
Winthrop YMCA spring coaches meeting
WINTHROP – There will be a meeting of those who have coached in the Winthrop Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball program to organize this year’s program. The meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23rd at 7 p.m. at the YMCA Office on Town Hall Lane. For more information, call Lonney Steeves at 377-9686. Registration for the program will begin March 10.
Strength and conditioning summer camp planned
RAYMOND – The Old School Strength & Conditioning Camp for high school students will open in the Sebago Lake region this summer under the direction of Lewiston High School graduate and Bowdoin College track coach Peter Slovenski. The camp will open July 3 on Panther Pond.
The camp program will combine traditional and old-fashioned exercises with modern exercise science to help athletes get stronger and in great shape for soccer, football, lacrosse, field hockey, hockey, track or any sport. Training will include hill running, jump rope, medicine ball drills, beach sprints, swimming, rope climbing, ladder running, dragging logs, punching a speed bag and splitting wood with an axe.
Camp coaches will teach athletes a series of warm-up drills designed to improve athletic power, explosiveness and speed. Recreational activities that enhance strength & conditioning such as Tug-of-War, dodgeball and beach volleyball will be included in the training.
Each day also will include optional periods when campers may elect to swim, kayak, canoe, fish, play wiffle ball or enjoy other summer activities on the shores of Panther Pond. For more information visit: www.slovenskicamps.com, or contact Coach Slovenski at [email protected].
