BETHEL — Western Mountains Senior College will host a soup swap, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at the Bethel Congregational Church dining hall, Church Street.
The event will be held in conjunction with spring class registrations, which begin at 5 p.m.
Western Mountains Senior College held its first soup swap two years ago, and the event proved to be so much fun that the group made it an annual event.
Committee chair, Marvin Ouwinga, said the idea is simple. Participants bring two quarts of hot soup in a crock pot or insulated pot for tasting and four quarts in quart containers already frozen.
After the tasting, those who bring frozen soup may choose different soups to take home, equal to the number they brought. Ouwinga said, “You only have to make one kind of soup but you go home with four different kinds, all ready to pull out of the freezer when you don’t feel like cooking.”
He said people may also volunteer to bring a dessert, bread or crackers. Some members bring extra quarts of frozen soup that are available for purchase.
Committee members assisting Ouwinga include Jodi Carter, Marcia Foster-Austin and Judy Whitman.
Everyone who attends the soup swap is asked to bring a nonperishable food or canned food for the local food pantry. Members who attend for the soup tasting, and who do not bring soup or other foods may make a monetary donation. All monetary donations collected will go toward the purchase of family food boxes that contain enough food for a family of four in need for three or four days.
For more information, to register to participate or to attend, call the continuing education office at Telstar High School at 824-2780 or e-mail Ouwinga at [email protected] no later than Tuesday, March 2.
The winter social activity is a WMSC member-only event. However, persons who wish to join the group may attend and join at the event. New members will also be eligible to join the upcoming spring courses.
