NEWRY — A Sunday River ski lodge was evacuated Sunday evening after a flash fire broke out in a restaurant kitchen and sent one man to an area hospital.
Darcy Liberty, director of communications for Sunday River, said that the minor blaze broke out in the kitchen of Shipyard Brew Haus Restaurant, one of several restaurants located in White Cap Base Lodge. The Sunday evening fire led authorities and mountain security to evacuate the entire lodge.
A cook at the restaurant put out the flash fire, which was caused by a fractured gas line, but was injured in the process. Liberty said that the man, whose name was not available Sunday night, was taken to Rumford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Liberty said that White Cap is one of the smaller lodges at Sunday River. She added that the fire was contained to the kitchen area of Shipyard Brew Haus, but she was unsure as to the extent of the damages. The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in because an individual was injured.
A dispatcher with the Oxford County Regional Communications Center said that the blaze was called in around 6:25 p.m. and that Newry Fire Department and Med-Care responded. An initial call to the Newry Fire Department was referred to Sunday River Security and media relations.
