MEXICO — Police have heard from several law enforcement agencies with suggestions on who may have robbed a Mexico convenience storm Sunday morning, but so far, no solid leads have turned up.

Each named person will be investigated, said Mexico police Chief James Theriault.

He said Monday that his department now has a copy of the surveillance tape of the man who took $254 at gunpoint from the Mexico One Stop located at the foot of Harlow Hill.

The man, described as a white male, 5′ 10” to 5′ 11”, weighing between 140 and 160 pounds, wore gray sweatpants, white sneakers, and a dark blue hooded sweatshirt when he entered the store at about 6:20 a.m. His face was largely covered by a scarf. The clerk on duty said the gun appeared to be a 9-mm pistol.

Theriault said he and Sgt. Roy Hodson are investigating the armed robbery.

He said this is the first armed robbery his department has investigated in at least two or three years. The last such incident took place at the Big Apple on River Road. The robber was eventually located and prosecuted.

Although Theriault could not identify the man from the security videotape, he said he looks like some of the other men his department has come in contact with.

Theriault interviewed the clerk again Monday morning, but no new information was gathered. He said she did everything right when the store was held up. In such instances, people are advised to do what the robber wants. Such actions reduce the chance of injury.

Police aren’t sure whether the robber had a vehicle. He was last seen running west on nearby Gleason Street.

Nine units from Mexico, Rumford, the Maine State Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s office responded to the call.
