FRYEBURG – Firefighters backed by rescue service personnel were battling a fire at Western Maine Nurseries late Sunday night.

The blaze was reported to be in one of the long-established business’s greenhouses. Firefighters were called out at about 10 p.m. First responders relayed to dispatchers that they found a “fully involved” structure fire.

Operated by Rick Eastman, the nurseries have been supplying deep-rooted evergreen seedlings and transplants since 1923.

Over the past several years, the business expanded its offerings to include more than 300 varieties of woody ornamentals. It also serves Christmas tree farms as well as owners of working forestlands who practice reforestation.

Western Maine Nurseries has its offices, a warehouse and greenhouses at 4 Nursery Lane, just south of Fryeburg Village off Route 5.

The nurseries typically have welcomed visitors and field trips.

According to its Web site, the nurseries grow more than 25 million trees on more than 300 acres. It also has more than 30,000 square feet of propagation and greenhouse space where it grows more than 1 million evergreen seedlings and up to a half million woody ornamentals in 3-inch pot liners annually.
