On March 31, Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School freshman Team 3 students from Sarah Kamilewicz’s earth science classes participated in an interactive video Skype session with Dr. Vicki Hansen, structural geologist, via the University of Minnesota, Duluth. The experiment uses technology to link high school students with professionals in their field of study. The students used their Netbook computers to read Hansen’s “Continental Impact” article, featured in “Science Illustrated.” Since one of the earth science standards is plate tectonics, the students were asked to generate questions from the article and from their study of continental drift. The Skype session allowed the students to have their questions answered personally by an expert in this field of study. Students are pictured during the session.
