ORONO, Maine (AP) — University of Maine engineers and developers have patented their ballistic material aimed at protecting troops at rest in tents or in sleep quarters.

Habib Dagher from the Advanced Engineered Wood Composites, Advanced Structures and Composites Center says the university recently signed a licensing agreement with a manufacturing partner, Portland-based Tex Tech Industries.

The Modular Ballistic Protection System consists of 4-by-8-foot composite panels that can be strapped to metal tent frames or placed on the inside of shipping containers to protect soldiers.

Dagher tells the Bangor Daily News that military personnel and contractors have inquired about the system. He says prototypes should be in Afghanistan and Iraq by next month.
