LEWISTON — Charles Elwell Bartlett, 89, of 3 Avery St. in Lisbon Falls, died early Tuesday, April 20, at Marshwood Center, after a long illness.

He was born in Lisbon Falls, June 15, 1920, the son of Charles H. and Georgia (Small) Bartlett. After his graduation from Lisbon Falls High School in 1938, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked on projects in the Midwest.

In 1941, he joined the Navy, and served honorably on the aircraft carrier USS Sangamon on the Pacific front. He married Charlene Bickford in 1948, and together they had five children.

In 1952, he attended school to become a plumber and worked on the Naval Air Base in Brunswick, until his retirement in 1981. He took great pride in doing his own snow shoveling and took meticulous care of his lawn up until he was 85 and had to stop due to illness.

He is survived by his son, Erik of Casco; daughter, Patrice Mathieu and husband, Marcel, of Bowdoin; son, Brian of Georgetown and his wife, Karen, of Bath and daughter, Heather of Lisbon; grandchildren, Jeremiah of Auburn, Erica of Portland, Brae Ann of Portland, Ore., Troy of Bath and Nathanial of Lisbon Falls; great-granddaughter, Sabine of Somerville, Mass.; his niece, Meline Price of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and his nephew, Calvin Woodcock and wife, Robin and their son, Joshua of Gray.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife; a daughter, Gail; and his sister, Marquese Saari.
