RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) – An elderly Connecticut couple traveling through Arkansas have been arrested after police discovered more than 200 pounds of marijuana inside of their truck.
Arthur N. Scherp Sr., 71, and Helene I. Scherp, 69, of Griswold, Conn. were stopped by an Arkansas State Police trooper Thursday on Interstate 40. Troopers say the couple offered a nonsensical travel story and acted nervous.
The trooper says the couple had cellophane-bundled packets of marijuana in their truck’s bed and another bag of marijuana was discovered in a passenger-side door.
Police say Arthur Scherp later told investigators he got $5,000 for making the trip.
The couple are being held on $35,000 bond.
