About 20 people from the River Valley area on Thursday joined millions more from around the nation in observing the National Day of Prayer at 12:15 p.m. at Veterans’ Memorial Park in Rumford. The tradition began in 1952 and has been held every year since, although as of 2009, it is no longer sanctioned by the federal government, said Justin Thacker, pastor of the Praise Assembly of God Church in Rumford. It is an opportunity for people to pray for the country’s national, state and local leaders.
