Book sale

FARMINGTON — The Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will hold a Books Are Fun sale, in the Bass Room at the hospital. The sale is open to the public. Sale times will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 17 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 18.

HS meeting

TEMPLE — Members of the Temple Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 17, at the Temple Town Hall. The program, which will immediately follow, will be a slide presentation by Dave Fuller about the history of spruce gum. The public is invited to attend.

Fuller, a Maine woods historian, will show slides of spruce gum and how it was gathered, processed and also used for things other than chewing. He is also looking for stories about spruce gum for his research and book project.

Society meeting

NEW VINEYARD — The New Vineyard Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the Society Room. Connie Hiltz of Farmington will speak on local Indian, Pierpole, and his wife, Hannah Sussup, and on the making of birch bark baskets.

Retired teachers

NEW SHARON — Members of the Franklin County Retired Teachers will meet at 11 a.m. Monday, May 17, at the New Sharon Methodist Church, Starks Road. There will be a program, followed by the meeting and lunch. New members are welcome. For more information, call 778-4282.

Wildflower walk

WILTON — Foothills Land Conservancy will sponsor a wildflower walk at 1 p.m. Sunday, May16, on the conservation land at the head of Wilson Lake.

The outing will be led by Nancy Prentiss, University of Maine at Farmington botanist. Her special interest is in native plant communities and she particularly likes the spring flora in Maine. She has been involved in volunteer monitoring of Maine rare plants for the New England Wildflower Society.

Participants should meet at the Pond Road parking lot. Anyone who would like more information about Foothills Land Conservancy and its activities may contact Cynthia Harkleroad, 645-2675 or Nancy Prince, 645-4027.
