LEWISTON — The 19th veterans’ memorial stone will be unveiled on Saturday, May 29, at Veterans Memorial Park, following the Twin Cities Memorial Day parade.

Grand marshal will be CMDCM (AW/SW) Daniel J. Nicholson, command master chief, Naval Air Station Brunswick. The National Anthem will be sung by Maurice Marquis, Marine Corps League. The invocation will be by Monsignor Marc Caron, administrator and pastor of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Holy Cross, Holy Family, St. Joseph and St. Patrick churches, followed by a moment of silence.

Lewiston Mayor Laurent Gilbert Sr. will welcome the public. A wreath of enduring memory will be placed at the Price of Freedom Stone by Chairman Paul Bernard and decorated World War II veteran Sergeant Henry B. Poisson, escorted by Ray Boulet of the Franco American War Veterans Color Guard.

The American Legion, Harry J. Conway Post 135, of Sabattus, will provide the firing squad for the event.

Roger Renaud will play “Taps.” Bert Dutil will officiate “Post Everlasting” and each chaplain of each veterans organization will read the names of deceased members who passed away since last Memorial Day.

There will be an unveiling of a memorial bench in remembrance of Lieutenant James B. Shields, by Thomas and Bethel Shields and family. The Franco American War Veterans Color Guard, Post 31, will escort the Shields family.

The unveiling of the 19th memorial stone will follow, by Bernard and Poisson. Poisson toured with the 150th Engineers A company. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and the British Military Medal.

The total number of veterans names listed on the memorial stones will be 3,888, plus 210 names on the Victoria Stone, five on the U.S.S. Maine and names on memorial benches and pavers.

Those attending the ceremony are asked to bring chairs as seating is very limited.
