NEW YORK (AP) – Police say a man who dashed past security guards at an upscale midtown Manhattan apartment building has died in an apparently accidental plunge into its trash compactor.
Police say the 34-year-old ran into the apartment tower, a few blocks west of the Empire State Building, shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday. He took an elevator to its 36th-floor roof level.
Police say he then apparently fell or accidentally jumped into a chute leading from the 35th floor to the garbage compactor 28 stories below. He was found dead inside it.
Telephone messages left for the West 33rd Street building’s management were not immediately returned.
