LOVELL — Musician, composer and singer-songwriter Davy Sturtevant will bring his varied mix of music and stories to Lovell’s Brick Church for the Performing Arts on Saturday, June 12.
Sturtevant plays guitar, banjo and mandolin and has a repertoire that includes folk, jazz, blues, swing and old-time music. His original songs are influenced by his life along Lake Erie and his father’s fiddle tunes. His songs have been recorded and performed by other nationally touring folk musicians including Joe Stead, Dan Duggan, John Kirk, Neal and Leandra, and Sue Trainor.
As a child, Sturtevant sang traditional ballads, camp songs and Lutheran hymns with his parents and three older siblings. By age 4, he persuaded his father, who was born in the Appalachian foothills of north central Pennsylvania, to show him simple guitar chords to back up fiddle tunes.
Through high school and college, he studied voice and trumpet, all the while keeping his folk roots alive by writing songs and teaching himself guitar.
For more than a decade, Sturtevant composed and performed as part of the collaborative duo Armor & Sturtevant, interpreting folk music of East Africa, Appalachia and the British Isles. He also wrote songs inspired and influenced by various folk traditions, classical music, bluegrass, rock ‘n’ roll and jazz. The duo’s CDs on the Tatema Music label garnered airplay on folk radio programs nationwide and internationally.
A 2001 sabbatical in East Africa enabled the duo to collect 40 hours of field recordings of choirs and traditional drumming ensembles. Highlights of those recordings have been released as a CD called “Roho: Songs of the Spirit from East Africa.”
With the support of the Presbyterian Church in America, Northeast Synod, they traveled again to record Malagasy vocal ensembles in 2004. The result of that expedition is the disc “Vavaka: Christian Composers of Madagascar.”
In 2009, Sturtevant collaborated with modern dance company SoMar DanceWorks for a performance of dance and music that Brick Church audiences enjoyed so much that he was asked to return for this solo show.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $10, will be available at the door. The Brick Church for the Performing Arts is on Christian Hill Road. For more information, call 925-2792.
