At the beginning of the season, the Edward Little softball team had two simple goals.

Now that the regular season is complete, the Red Eddies have already crossed one off their list and are ready to embark on the other.

“We talked at the beginning of the year that one of our goals is to make the playoffs,” said EL coach Elaine Derosby. “We’ve done that. Our other goal is to be playing our best softball at the end of the year. We’re playing really well offensively and if we can clean it up defensively, we will be playing our best softball at the end of the year. That’s all we can ask of them. They’re working hard.”

The final Heal Points for softball have still not been finalized because of a few regular season finales in Eastern Maine still to be played, but according to the Maine Principal’s Association, the standings in Western Maine and Eastern A are not effected by the remaining games and should not change when the final standings are posted.

EL finished the regular season at 12-5 and secured the fifth seed in Eastern A. The Red Eddies won eight of its last nine games and were in position to have the fourth seed and a home playoff game before dropping a spot in the final standings. EL opens the playoffs with a quarterfinal at Erskine Academy. The Eagles, who finished 11-5 and fourth overall, were beaten by EL May 24 in China, 5-4.

“They’re going into the playoffs knowing that they can beat anybody,” said Derosby. “That’s our focus right now.”

Also in Eastern A, Oxford Hills earned the seventh spot with a 9-7 record. The Vikings will play at 15-1 Bangor in the quarterfinals.

In Class C, Telstar finished off its perfect regular season with a 14-0 record. The Rebels dominated the opposition, outscoring them 132 to 11 this season. The Rebels lost just two players from the regional title team last year and are on course to defend that crown.

“We expected to do well,” said Telstar coach Jim Lunney. “I’m very pleased with our girls so far.”

Jay finished 9-6 to take the fourth spot and will host Mt. Abram (9-5). Dirigo finished the year winning six straight and will play at third-ranked Hall-Dale (11-3). Monmouth won its last four and finished 8-6 for the seventh-seed. The Mustangs take on unbeaten second-seeded Georges Valley (14-0).

In Class B, the two-time defending regional champs from Fryeburg claimed the top seed with a 15-1 record. The Raiders produced that season despite losing a wealth of starters from the state championship team.

“I figured we’d be .500, if that,” said Fryeburg coach Fred Apt. “We just did well.”

After Maranacook (14-2) and Greely (14-2), Gray-New Gloucester landed the fourth seed. The Patriots lost to Fryeburg in the regional final last year and had high hopes for this season. Gray-New Gloucester will host Lincoln Academy (13-3) in the first round.

Oak Hill had been chasing the third spot but a Raider loss in the regular season finale and wins by Gray-NG and Greely dropped Oak Hill to sixth. The Raiders (13-3) will play at Greely in the quarterfinals.

“We had a great season,” said Oak Hill coach Julie Boucher. “They’re a great team. They have good potential. I told them that we still have a long way to go here. This is just the regular season done, and now we have so many days of playoffs where anything is possible.”

Lisbon had a complete turnaround after winning only a few games and finished 12-4 this year, but that only got the Greyhounds the ninth seed in a strong Western B field. Lisbon plays at Wells (9-7) in a preliminary next week to advance to a quarterfinal game against Fryeburg.

In Western D, the top two teams are no real surprise. Richmond and Buckfield are traditionally the two powers, and that didn’t change this year. Richmond took the top seed at 13-1 while Buckfield was close behind at 12-2. The Bobcats will host Greenville (9-5) in the semifinals while Buckfield hosts third-seeded Rangeley (7-6). The Bucks will play that semifinal game next Friday at 4 p.m.
