HALLOWELL — Gaslight Theater will present the Broadway musical “Bells are Ringing” later this month.

In the play Ella, the most valuable employee of Susanswerphone, lives vicariously through the lives of her answering service’s clients — until she falls in love with playwright Jeff Moss, who believes that only Ella’s anonymous voice can break through his writer’s block.

Woven into the plot are an illegal bookmaking operation, the police and some major misunderstandings.

“Bells are Ringing” opened on Broadway in November of 1956 and ran for 924 performances. The original cast included Judy Holliday, Jean Stapleton and Eddie Lawrence.

The score features such favorites as “Just in Time” and “The Party’s Over.”

Performances will be at 8 p.m. on June 18, 19, 25 and 26; at 2 p.m. on June 20 and 27; and at 7:30 p.m. on June 24. Admission is $12, payable at the door. For reservations, call 626-3698.
