FARMINGTON — University of Maine at Farmington President Theodora J. Kalikow has announced Nancy Marshall and Alison Hagerstrom have been elected as the chair and vice chair of the UMF board of visitors.

Marshall, named a “Star of PR” by PR News, a national industry trade publication, is the president and founder of Maine’s largest public relations agency, Nancy Marshall Communications. Her agency, located in Augusta, specializes in media relations and marketing services and has won “Best of Show” in the Maine Public Relations Council Golden Arrow Awards competition for three consecutive years.

The agency has been recognized with two national awards from the Society of American Travel Writers, and was recognized in 2000 for its commitment to quality with a Margaret Chase Smith Quality Award. A graduate of Colby College, with an MBA from Thomas College, Marshall lives in Carrabassett Valley with her husband Jay and their two sons, Craig and Jamie.

Hagerstrom is executive director of the Greater Franklin Development Corporation. In 2006, she was chosen as the Franklin Journal and Livermore Falls Advertiser’s first-ever “Person of the Year.” She is a former Farmington business owner with more than 20 years of manufacturing and management experience. Hagerstrom served on the Plus 1 Small Business Committee created by former Gov. Angus King and in June of 1991, received the UMF Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement Award.

The Maine Development Foundation recognized the Greater Franklin Development Corporation for its extraordinary commitment to Maine with the 2007 Champion of Economic Development Award after State Rep. Janet Mills submitted the nomination. A graduate of UMF, Hagerstrom resides in Farmington with her husband and is a member of the Farmington Rotary Club.

The University of Maine System mandates that each of its seven universities has a board of visitors of up to 20 members who are recommended by the campus presidents and confirmed by the board of trustees. These regional leaders serve as advocates and advisors for each institution, review final recommendations on tuition increases and new academic programs and raise private funds for the university.

On May, 24, by University of Maine System board of trustee approval, Dana Bullen, Sharon Cullenberg, Chris DeMerchant, Edward Fox, Ray Glass, Sandra Goodwin, Bruce Hazard, Peter Judkins, Lisa Park Laflin, Lorna Nichols and John Ritzo were elected to serve a first three-year term.

They will join Gerald Cayer, Alison Hagerstrom, Eileen Kreutz, Lee Anne Larsen, Nancy Marshall, Charles Murray, Vici Robinson, Tanya Swain and Linus Travers currently serving on UMF’s board of visitors. Serving in an advisory capacity at the end of their terms are Richard T. Bjorn, Lou Hight, Paul Mills, John Witherspoon and former chair Barbara Woodlee.
