AUBURN – Police were investigating an assault Wednesday night in which a young man was reportedly struck by a car during a confrontation at a carnival in the downtown.

A witness said at about 8:30 p.m. that the victim was struck by a car after exchanging words with someone inside the vehicle. The witness said the victim, believed to be in his 20s, was crossing the road at Great Falls Plaza when the driver of the car honked the horn.

Words were exchanged, the witness said. Moments later, the victim was hit by the car and knocked to the ground.

When rescue crews arrived, the victim was placed on a stretcher. The witness said he appeared alert and conscious.

Police would not identify the victim or provide information about the injuries. At the Auburn police station later Wednesday night, Lt. Anthony Harrington declined to say whether the victim required medical treatment. Police also did not say whether anyone had been charged in the incident.
