Fully 2,000 people listened to a fine band concert given on the Park last evening by the Brigade Band. The nuisance of the small boys, who generally take points of vantage on the bandstand has been removed, but much of last evening’s concert was spoiled by explosions of firecrackers and blank cartridges. Apparently no effort was made to stop this premature celebration.
50 years ago, 1960
A public hearing on the Raytheon Co. plant’s application to discharge manufacturing and domestic waste into the Androscoggin River through the city sewer system will be held at the Lewiston city building on July 18. The hearing was called by the Maine Water Improvement Commission.

HEBRON — Sen. Bill Cohen recently announced that the federal government has awarded $514,014 to be used to improve energy efficiency in schools, hospitals and churches in 13 of Maine’s 16 counties.
Hebron Academy in Hebron has received $4,467 to be used for technical assistance and for the actual purchase and installation of energy-conservation devices.
Cohen said that the Department of Energy administers the special program designed to help public institutions conserve energy and control future energy costs.
