CARTHAGE — New England Celtic Arts will host Michael Black, son of one of Ireland’s most famous musical families, Sunday, June 27, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center.
His three daughters, Ciara, Maeveand Catriona, who are avid Irish dancers, singers and musicians, will perform with him on-stage.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m., with a preshow jam at 6:15 p.m.
Black, his brothers Shay and Marti, and their sisters Mary and Frances are among the most popular singers in Ireland today. The siblings have been performers all their lives. Both parents were singers, with dad, Kevin, an accomplished piper, fiddler and mandolin player.
Black now lives in San Francisco and has taught at the University of San Francisco and San Francisco State University. He came to the United States in 1984 to attend the University of California at Berkeley; 12 years later, he received a Ph.D. in sociology.
Black was active in San Francisco’s music, where he was a regular performer at the Plough and Stars pub for many years. He performed as a banjo player and guitarist with many Irish artists, including Paddy Keenan, John Whelan, Nollaig Casey and James Kelly. More recently, he rejuvenated his solo career, playing at various venues throughout the United States.
In the past year, he has performed in Maine, Utah, Texas and Philadelphia, and is planning a new solo album this year.
His first solo album, released in 2007 and simply titled “Michael Black,” features a variety of songs from shanties, a song in Irish, anti-war songs and a number of chorus songs.
Tickets are $10 at the door. Call 562-4445. Skye Theater is 2 Highland Drive.
