ROXBURY — The Roxbury ATV four-wheeler club dedicated its annual ride on May 22 in memory of Lee Hodgkins. Every year the club chooses a different charity to benefit, and this year the choice was Rumford Hospital’s Diabetes Education.
Lee Hodgkins, son of Gibby Hodgkins, was one of the founding members of the Roxbury ATV four-wheeler club. He died from complications of diabetes. This year the club decided to donate the proceeds of the ride to support diabetes care.
According to Diabetes Educator Barbara MacGregor, BSN, CDE, RN, the money will be used toward renovating the new diabetes office where patients are seen individually as well as in classes instructed by MacGregor and a dietitian.
The Diabetes Education program, a satellite of the CMMC Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, is a set of four classes and another six individual counseling sessions from MacGregor, a certified diabetes educator and a hospital dietitian, spanning a full year of care. Patients learn to self-manage their diabetes thus reducing acute and chronic complications.
Patients are referred by their physicians or may self-refer by calling Rumford Hospital Diabetes Education at 369-1222.
