LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a free monthly lunch and learn series for cancer caregivers. Sessions will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at 12 High St., on the CMMC campus. Lunch will be provided and space is limited to eight participants.
The series is designed to provide the caregiver with tools to care for themselves as well as their loved one while connecting with other caregivers in a group setting. Sessions are as follows:
Monday, July 5, “The Language of Comforting.” Grief and loss counselor Val Walker will explore what it means to be a comforting presence.
Monday, Aug. 2: “Navigating the Jargon of Health-Related Documents.” Certified Advance Care Planning Facilitator Susan Applegate, LSW, MSM, will assist with navigating advance directives, living wills, types of power of attorney and more.
Monday, Sept. 13: “Caring for My Mom.” Adult children who become caregivers have a unique role and perspective. Dempsey Center Volunteer Corps Manager Mary Dempsey will share her experience in caring for her mother who was diagnosed with cancer 11 years ago.
