Quincy Gray McMichael, a graduate of the former Liberty School of Blue Hill, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor on June 5.
As with all students at College of the Atlantic, McMichael’s degree is in human ecology. The pursuit required McMichael to create an independent course of study within the college’s interdisciplinary curriculum.
McMichael became fascinated with food and foodways while at COA and spent time studying at Le Cordon Bleu in London, working and studying at Whipstone Farm in Paulden, Ariz. and interning at the Prescott Local Food Economy Project in Prescott, Ariz.
Her term-long senior project was a book examining the food, culture and recipes of the southeast, called “Crabcake Nation: An Exploration of Coastal Foodways in the Southeastern United States,” primarily researched in Savannah, Ga.
McMichael, the daughter of Sarah Miller Voorhees of Crawley, W.Va. and Douglas Glen McMichael of Peru, and the granddaughter of Stephen Coerte Voorhees of Merry Point, Va., attended Mountain Valley High School in Rumford, and Groton School in Groton, Mass., before graduating from the Liberty School.
