PARIS — Oxford County commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday to trade in an aging cruiser received when the county took over police coverage of Bethel.
Sheriff Wayne Gallant said the vehicle has approximately 240,000 miles on it. Two newer vehicles that belonged to the Bethel Police Department have been repainted and put in the department’s fleet for Bethel coverage.
The commissioners’ vote accepted Gallant’s recommendation that the Sheriff’s Office purchase a Dodge Charger cruiser from Bessey Motor Sales in Paris for $22,700. Gallant said the Ripley and Fletcher dealership in Paris bid $25,900 to supply a cruiser and offered to meet Bessey’s price if the older cruiser was traded in. Gallant said the cruiser can be traded at Bessey’s to further reduce the price.
Last month, Bethel residents voted in favor of contracting the Sheriff’s Office for $295,000 a year. Three part-time deputies were promoted to provide full-time coverage, and a police substation was established on Route 2 in the Mahoosuc Land Trust building.
Gallant said the transition, which officially began on July 1, has gone well.
“You go up there any you don’t want to leave, it’s so nice,” he said.
