MEXICO — The following incidents were handled by the Mexico Police Department.

Thefts

An arrest was made on July 11 on a charge of receiving stolen property in connection with the theft that took place on July 5. Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said a Sunset Avenue resident reported the theft of a GPS, valued at $300, and a cell phone plug and iPod converter cord, valued at $120, from her vehicle. Oren Capen, 19, of Granite Street, Mexico, was charged with receiving stolen property, the GPS, when he tried to sell it at a Rumford shop. He was taken to Oxford County jail, then released the next day. He is scheduled to appear in Rumford District Court on Oct. 5. The cord and plug have not been found.

A Peru Center resident reported at 3:56 p.m., July 9, that someone had entered his vehicle which was parked in the Main Street NewPage parking lot and stole a garage door opener, vehicle owner’s manual and a pair of sunglasses, valued at $45.

A Wyman Hill Road, Rumford, resident reported the theft of her purse from a shopping cart in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 2:02 p.m., July 7. The woman had left the purse in the cart after unloading her purchases. When she returned, the purse was gone. A security camera recorded another woman who was driving a silver vehicle, getting out and taking the purse. Police ask anyone with information to call the department.

Burglary

A Harlow Hill Road resident reported at 7:41 a.m., July 13, that someone had broken into a shed adjacent to his home and stole a Jonsered chain saw valued at $320.

Hit and Run Accident

A four-door 1998 Chrysler sedan parked on Granite Street and owned by Kristen Touchette, 20, of Mexico, was hit by an unidentified vehicle at 10:30 p.m., July 13, causing $1,200 damage. The unidentified vehicle then spun around and hit a utility pole. The driver and vehicle left the scene before police arrived.

Recreation Park vandalism update

The most recent attempt to gain illegal entry into the Route 17 Mexico Recreation Park occurred on July 9 when someone damaged a locked gate located at the far end of the park near the tennis courts. About $200 damage occurred. A few days before, someone had tried to enter the park through a gate that is located between the park and the adjacent public works garage. Police had arrested two men for causing several thousand dollars damage to park property in May and are continuing investigations into two separate incidents.

Hot dogs

Hodsdon warns pet owners not to leave their animals in parked cars during hot weather. He said he received five calls from concerned people about dogs left in cars during the past week. Even with windows open, the temperature can rise to a deadly level.
