100 years ago, 1910

Many local lovers of trees who have been anxious concerning the blight which has appeared on the maple trees will be glad of the assurance by Prof. Hitchings that the trouble is simply a fungus growth caused by the damp weather through June. Prof. Hitchings says that there will be no special permanent injury to the trees.

50 years ago, 1960

No one could have asked for better summer weather than the Twin Cities enjoyed yesterday.

The sun shone in a sky that was mostly a clear, deep blue with only a few white clouds scattered around the horizon. The day was cool with a light breeze.

From 59 degrees at 6 a.m., the temperature rose to 70 degrees at noon and 77 degrees at 4 p.m. By 11 p.m. the temperature was 65 degrees.

The date’s record temperatures were set in 1895 when the temperature rocketed to 96 degrees and in 1929 when the low of 48 degrees was recorded.

25 years ago 1985

Tim Vrabel, energy specialist at the Lewiston Energy Extension Office, has a special invitation to the solar energy tour he will conduct next Sunday.

“I encourage skeptics, I welcome them.”

Vrabel’s tour will cover several areas of solar energy and several ways of tapping that energy.

The tour, he said, is geared to the conservation-minded homeowner who is looking at ways to utilize solar energy, but isn’t sure what’s available.
