Board: Turner selectmen

Met: Monday night

River going down

Issue: A rock in the lower part of the Nezinscot River dam has shifted and the dam needs to be repaired.

The scoop: It was last repaired in 2003. Water starts to lower in the river this time of year, to a degree, naturally.

Up next: Upstream landowners and the town of Buckfield will get letters notifying them of repairs and that the water level’s being dropped. Town Manager Eva Leavitt said that boards in the dam will be taken out one at a time, so the decrease will be gradual. The project is estimated to take two weeks at the end of August.

Coming up

Issue: Selectmen will set a mill rate at their next meeting, Aug. 2, when final assessment figures are in. The rate likely wouldn’t become final until two weeks later. Leavitt said tax bills would be mailed on or about Sept. 1, with the first payment due Nov. 1.

Issue: Selectmen will hold a workshop Aug. 2 to talk about Public Works. Leavitt said staffing and other changes would be brainstormed. Public Works has one job opening. The town has a hiring freeze, but selectmen can lift it.
