I was riding with my mother down Pine Street in Lewiston and we noticed a police officer driving behind us. We continued to travel toward town when a pit bull came out of nowhere and attempted to run across the street in front of our car. My mother made an abrupt stop and the dog darted behind us.

We slowly left the scene, assuming the police would do something. Looking in the rear/side mirrors, we observed the police officer driving around the highly stressed and anxious dog continuing down the street.

Should that have happened?

I believe that the dog should have been observed or followed until the correct authorities came. Any dog that is stressed and confused is at risk for themselves and possibly others.

Who knows what had transpired in the moments before we saw it? That it just got loose could have been the reason, but something else might have taken place.

If there had been a person or another animal coming toward that animal at that time, there could have been a major incident. Who knows?

We felt that the officer in question didn’t take the correct course of action and did not think about the big picture.

This is not a judgment of the pit bull breed.
