Poetry group to meet

RUMFORD — The poetry group will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Rumford Public Library.

The group will feature the Maine gubernatorial inaugural poem, “The Song for the Unsung,” by Wesley McNair. The former Maine poet laureate read at the library in November.

Society to present ‘Movie Night’

CANTON — The Canton Historical Society is hosting “Movie Night,” showing the original 1937 version of “A Star is Born,” starring Janet Gaynor and Fredic March.

The movie will be shown from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in its building at 25 Turner St. Doors open at 6.

This event is free and open to the public. Popcorn, candy and drinks will be on sale. The venue is handicap accessible.

Society to meet, have potluck

FARMINGTON — The monthly meeting of the Farmington Historical Society will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Pierce House, 204 Main St.

Potluck dinner with meeting to follow. Steve Sharoun will present the program, “A History of the Town Farms of Farmington.”  Parking and entrance are at the rear of the building. 

The public is welcome. 

GFFC to host Green Drinks event

KINGFIELD — The Greater Franklin Food Council will host “High Peaks Green Drinks-Beers for a Cause” from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at The Inn on Winter’s Hill. 

There is a $10 donation at the door and is free for anyone under 21. Attendees over 21 get one free beer courtesy of Tumbledown Brewing; more beer will be available for purchase. 

This event was organized to get High Peaks Region residents together to help support the work of the food council in promoting food security, food recovery, education and local agriculture; 100 percent of donations support the projects of the GFFC.

Fayette library receives grant

FAYETTE — The Underwood Memorial Library and the board of trustees have received a $1,000 grant from the Maine Community Fund.

The board and the director, Evelyn Feagin, and assistant, Michele Briggs, have been planning and working on improvements within the library for months. The money was used to develop a reading room for adults with-n the library.

The grant purchased room improvements and the furnishings for the new area. All are invited to a ribbon-cutting event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the library, 2006 Main St. Refreshments will be served.

Washi tape lantern workshop

FREEPORT — There will be a workshop on how to make a washi tape lantern from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Freeport Comunity Library.

This event is for children and their families, ages 5 and up. Adult supervision is required for children under 11. Each child will get their own glass jar to decorate with colors and patterns along with a candle to bring home. Sign-up required; limited to 30.

Androscoggin Democrats to meet

AUBURN — The regular monthly meeting of the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Auburn Hall, 60 Court St., in the second floor Community Room. (Parking is available in the parking garage directly behind City Hall on Mechanics Row.)

Elections will be held for chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer of the committee, and there will be plans discussed for future meetings.
