LEWISTON — The Lewiston Maineiacs will move forward without 17-year-old Lewiston native Connor Anthoine.

Anthoine informed the team of his decision Tuesday, saying he will honor his commitment to the University of Vermont and return to the Eastern Junior Hockey League’s Green Mountain Glades this fall.

“I told Connor, ‘We’re not disappointed in you at all,'” Maineiacs’ GM Roger Shannon said. “I said, ‘We’re very disappointed for the team.’ He made a decision based on a lot of information, and you know what, he’d made a commitment to do something, and I am sure there was plenty of advice, and it’s good advice, to stick to his commitment.”

Anthoine’s departure drops the number of players at camp down to 31, and the number of forwards to 16.

Shannon did say Tuesday there is a chance that a previously-released player may return to the fold, depending on what happens in the next week or so.

Note:

Head coach J.F. Houle and managing consultant Bill Schurman both left Lewiston Tuesday for meetings. Schurman will attend the QMJHL governors’ meeting in Rouyn-Noranda, while Houle will attend another league meeting in Montreal.
