WINTHROP – The Winthrop Red Sox broke open a close contest with a seven-run fifth inning and went on to defeat the Jay Orioles, 16-5, in Pine Tree League senior baseball playoff action.

Sam Shain’s two-run triple and an inside-the-park home run off the bat of J.P. Palleschi highlighted the decisive rally.

The teams exchanged the lead through the first four innings. Zach Keene and Edwin Thompson had RBI singles in the third to put Jay up 5-3. In the bottom of the fourth, Winthrop pulled ahead 6-5 with RBIs from Dave Ricker Sr. and Palleschi.

Red Sox starting pitcher Torey Carr, back from injury, picked up the win with seven innings of work. Nate Stubbert mopped up the final two frames. Jim Flagg absorbedthe loss for Jay.

Shain provided the pop for Winthrop with a pair of triples and three runs scored. Other repeaters for the sox were J.P. and Eric Palleschi, Brett Witherell and Josh Nichols. Oliver Pettingill and Chris Bessey were repeat hitters for the Orioles.
