JAY — The Jay School Committee elected Darcie Comstock on Thursday to fill a committee vacancy until the next election, Superintendent Robert Wall said Friday.
The committee interviewed Comstock, 32, of Jay during an executive session before its meeting. Comstock was the only applicant for the vacancy.
“I feel it’s a good opportunity to become involved with the town more,” Comstock said Friday. “There’s a lot going on (with school consolidation), and I’d like to be part of it.”
It’s also an opportunity to better understand the school consolidation issue, she said.
Comstock has been involved in the Jay schools for the past 10 years as the children of her boyfriend, Bill Calden, worked through the grades, she said.
She has also come to know many of the students and parents in Jay through coaching soccer and basketball for Area Youth Sports and junior varsity basketball at the Middle School, she said.
During the summer, the couple manage a set of fishing and hunting camps, Tim Pond Camps, in northern Franklin County.
The board sought to elect a new member after Marga Hutchinson, whose term expires in June 2011, tendered her resignation last month for personal reasons.
Comstock will serve until the next election, probably in June, but if Jay and RSU 36 schools consolidate, an election could be held sooner, Wall said.
In other business, the committee approved the superintendent’s nominations to fill coaching and music/drama adviser positions.
Tina Bonnevie was approved for the position of Jay Middle School junior varsity field hockey coach. Brady Lake fills the Jay High School junior varsity football coach position.
Rosie Richmond was approved to fill half of the position of Jay High School winter cheering coach, and Kellee Fortier will fill half the position for the 2010-11 school year.
Kristel Anuszewski was approved for the position of Jay High School drama adviser and Dianne Fenlason for the position of Jay High School Band director.
