RUMFORD — Mountain Valley’s pride was put to an early test in its football season-opening Class B Campbell Conference tilt Friday night.

Cameron Kaubris, Taylor Bradley and Josh Allen each scored two touchdowns, and the Falcons rose to the occasion in a 45-6 triumph against Lake Region at Chet Bulger Field.

Mountain Valley (1-0) bent a little as Lake Region drove to the Falcons 26-yard line on its first possession. The tide turned quickly as the Falcons defense set up two scores.

“I wish were more physical,” Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward said. “We were at times, but there were times when we coasted. Lake Region is a good team. They are physical and came in believing they could compete. The meat of our schedule is coming and we realize that we need to improve.”

Ben Higley stripped the ball and Zach Radcliffe recovered. On the first play from scrimmage, Kaubris (two of four for 73 yards, TD) threw to Allen who broke a tackle and sprinted down the left side line for a 47-yard TD. Izaak Mills kicked his first of three extra points in the first half.

The Falcons’ Nicholas Sterling picked off a pass by Lakers QB Ryan Skillhen and returned it to the Lake Region 8-yard yard. Kaubris called his own number to score a TD.

“We came out a little sluggish,” said Kaubris, who rushed for a 1-yard TD at the end of the second quarter. “But once we made a couple big plays, we got fired up. This was our first game and the effort was good, overall. The mistakes we made are correctable in practice.”

Bradley (120 yards, 12 rushes) rushed for TDs of 14 and 51 yards. Bradley transferred back to Mountain Valley after playing for Skowhegan last year.

“There are some things that we still need to work on,” Bradley said. “It started with the backs being too (inpatient) and not waiting for blocks. Also, our team tackling needs to be better.”

Lake Region pulled to within 14—6 following a 70-yard TD run by Tristan Lacey (89 yards seven rushes). Except for the long run, the Lakers were held to 88-yards on 41 carries by a committee of runners and only converted one of their final 11 third-down conversions.

The MV defense made several huge stands led by linebackers Ryan Glover and Mills (seven tackles), Taylor Carey and Tyler Morton (sack) and end Christian Durland.

Lake Region fumbled five times and lost three. MV defender Isaac Ladesma recovered one which led to a score.

“We ran our same defense,” Mills said. “We did switch to a 5-3 once, but other than that it was our basic 4-4.”

MV completed the scoring on a 9-yard run by Tyler Smith (42 yards, three rushes) in the fourth quarter. The Falcons showed some discipline and were penalized four times for 30 yards.
