RUMFORD —Chrissy Briggs scored the game’s only goal seven minutes into the second half to lift Mountain Valley to a 1-0 triumph over Winthrop in the MVC season opener for both girls’ soccer teams Saturday.

Briggs’ game winner came on a long shot from outside the box. The Falcons outshot Winthrop, 34-5.

Breana Roberts made five saves for the shutout, while Danielle Pease made 24 saves.

Rangeley 4, Buckfield 1

BUCKFIELD — Allie Hammond recorded a pair of goals to lead Rangeley to a 4-1 victory over Buckfield in girls’ soccer action Saturday.

The Lakers (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half. Taylor Bean and Morgan Rodway accounted for Rangeley’s remaining goals.

Alicia Patrie prevented the Bucks (0-1) from being shutout with a second half goal.

Goalies Natasha Elsman and Katie Corson combined for eight saves for Buckfield, while Emily Carrier earned the win in net for Rangeley with seven saves.

Boys’ soccer

Winthrop 5, Mtn. Valley 0

RUMFORD — Evan Arbour scored the game’s first three goals to send Winthrop to a season-opening 5-0 triumph over Mountain Valley in MVC boys’ socccer action Saturday.

The Ramblers built a 2-0 lead by halftime. In addition to Arbour, Ryan Valle and Alex Henson also scored goals in the second half. Alex Telow chipped in with three assists.

Cameron MacMillan made three saves for the shutout. Falcons’ keeper David Widger stopped seven shots.

Buckfield 5, Rangeley 0

BUCKFIELD — Alan Hebrick and Austin Dooley scored two goals each to lead Buckfield to a 5-0 victory over Rangeley in a boys’ soccer match Saturday.

The Bucks took control

early, scoring four times in the opening half. Trevor Averill added a goal and two assists for Buckfield.

Casey Robertson and Garrett Hammond combined on the shutout with seven saves.
