RUMFORD — A high-speed chase north on Route 120 late Tuesday night has resulted in the arrest of a Peru woman and a Rumford man.

Rumford Police Department Sgt. David Bean said Thursday afternoon that Kaine Hodgkins, 21, of Rumford, was charged with felony eluding a police officer, operating after suspension and making a false report. He is scheduled to appear in Oxford County Superior Court on Nov. 19.

Christa Casey, 22, of Peru, was charged with making a false report. She is scheduled to appear in Rumford District Court on Nov. 2.

Bean said the case is still under investigation and other charges may be brought.

The two were arrested at the Rumford Police Department at 2 p.m. Wednesday, after interviews by several police officers. Casey was released on $100 cash bail. Hodgkins was released on $1,000 cash bail.

The incident began just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when officer Lawrence Winson spotted the 2003 Pontiac sedan being driven erractically north on Route 120. He turned on his blue lights.

When he did that, the vehicle sped up, and continued up the road until it eventually turned onto a fire lane near the satellite station, Bean said. Winson then decided to end the chase. He continued on and found the car, which was smoking, slowed down and saw a woman flee the vehicle.

State troopers had been called in, including one with a tracking dog, but the scent was not picked up.

The next day, Casey and Hodgkins went to the Rumford Police Department where they reported that the vehicle, owned by Casey, had been stolen. Following the interview, the two were arrested.

Assisting in the case were Rumford police Capt. Dan Garbarini and Sgt. James Bernard, and Warden Brock Clukey.
