LEWISTON — Vera A. Timberlake, 93, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Central Maine Medical Center with her family by her side. She had been a resident in assisted living at Clover Health Care in Auburn for the last six years.
She was born in Lewiston, Sept. 5, 1917, the daughter of Herbert and Emma Bagley. She attended Lewiston schools and finished her last year at Woonsocket High School in Rhode Island. In 1936, she married Stanwood Mitchell, and they had four girls.
After 15 years of marriage, her husband died of tuberculosis. She then married Clyde Burgess in 1957. After his death in 1969, she married Elmer (Tige) Timberlake in 1970, and had in her own words, “34 joyous years” until his death in 2004.
Together they owned and operated a dairy farm in North Turner, was very active in the Grange and served in many different positions at the local, state and national levels. They were also camping enthusiasts joining the “Scotty Club” (later renamed “Road Runners”) with their many friends, traveling to many states and Canadian provinces, and in later years becoming “Snow Birds” wintering in Zephyrhills, Fla., and returning to Maine summers.
Vera was an honest person and a hardworking woman raising her girls by herself after her first husband died. She worked in several local shoe shops, working as a nurses aid, dietician and head housekeeper, cleaning homes and anything else to put food on the table.
She enjoyed crocheting, doing plastic canvas, knitting sweaters and afghans for her children and grandchildren, playing card games, Dominos, and especially cribbage in her later years. She is survived by her four daughters, Arlene Harris and her husband, Charles, of Poland, Barbara Harris and her husband, Malcolm, of Minot, Betty Robinson of North Carolina, and Sylvia Mahoney of Utah; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
