SKOWHEGAN – A Franklin County man was killed Saturday in truck mishap while bird hunting in Anson.

Bruce W. Frederick, 55, of Farmington, died after the pickup truck he was driving went off a snowmobile bridge and into a stream in the area of Town Farm Road and Four Mile Square Road, off state Route 243, Somerset County Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II of the sheriff’s department said Monday.

Gottardi said Frederick and Kerry Kendall, 57, of Gardiner, were bird hunting in the area when the white, 1998 GMC truck got stuck on a woods road. The truck was registered to Frederick.

Kendall apparently exited the truck to help Frederick free the vehicle, which unexpectedly went off the bridge and crashed into the water below.

Kendall reportedly jumped into the water and attempted to get Frederick out of the truck before it became submerged in the water, but was unsuccessful, according to Gottardi. He then ran through the woods to summon help.

The accident was reported at about 4 p.m. Saturday.

Somerset County deputies Eugene Cole and Wilfred Dodge responded to the scene, as did personnel from the Anson Fire Department and A&M Ambulance Service.
