On Aug. 17, I wrote a letter, “Why I dislike football,” and pointed out actual playing time of the past Super Bowl between the Colts and Saints.
Before the Super Bowl, I also observed two other games during the playoffs, between the Colts and Jets, and the Vikings and Saints. The Colts played for 6 minutes, 5 seconds, while the Jets had 5 minutes, 9 seconds, for a total of 11 minutes, 14 seconds for the game. The Vikings and Saints had the Vikings playing for 7 minutes, 45 seconds, and the Saints had 6 minutes, 8 seconds, for a total of 13 minutes, 53 seconds.
I pointed these out for fans to realize how little time the ball is in play, and how silly, asinine and odious the salaries are that the players receive to play an average of 7 minutes per game. Multiply 16 games by an average of 7 minutes and you get a total of 112 minutes that teams play for the whole season.
If a player earns $8 million per year, which some do, that’s $500,000 per game. Tom Brady’s new contract comes to mind, since he’ll be earning $18 million per year ($1.125 million per game), which is mind-boggling when you figure he plays a total of about 7 minutes.
If that is not asinine, I’d like to know what is.
But when it comes to being entertained, people seem to care less about what it costs, as stadiums are full every week.
