RUMFORD — An elderly Roxbury woman escaped injury Wednesday morning when the car she was driving through the armory parking lot collided with cement steps and a steel handrail, police said.
Investigating Officer Lawrence Winson said Hazel Hodgkins was driving a 2005 Chevy Equinox when the accident happened at 8:50 a.m. at the What Not Shop entrance at the back of the armory.
“She was pulling in and she said her brakes failed,” Winson said. “The car collided with the cement steps and both airbags deployed. She said she’s had the car at the shop three times for brake issues since she bought it.”
Winson estimated damage to the Chevy at $6,000; to the steps, rail and a wooden flower pot beside the thrift store’s steps, $350.
