In a recent letter (Sept.23), a Rumford resident criticized efforts now under way to begin restoration of Strathglass Park. The letter was uninformed and incorrect in several respects.
Much of the recent work was done under a CDBG grant won by the town last year. All federal grants of this kind must be done under the strict supervision of the Maine State Historical Preservation Commission.
The commission has closely monitored everything done in this recent program, so the accusations of historical inaccuracy are uninformed and incorrect. The letter writer’s accusation of structural problems in the repair are also extremely uninformed, incorrect and insulting to the qualified, experienced and well-reputed professionals doing the work.
At present, the Strathglass Park Preservation Society is undertaking to repair and, where needed, replace the mortar in the gateway to the park. If this is not done, the great pillars at the park’s entrance could eventually collapse.
We have even incorporated the writer’s suggestion as to how the seams should appear as to make them more historically appropriate.
After decades of neglect, the park is at last having some restoration work accomplished. I hope that the unfounded and inexplicable opposition of one resident does not interfere with work that is so badly needed.
