LEWISTON — A search committee recommending finalists for the city’s next school superintendent handed over two names to the School Committee on Monday night, committee Chairman James Handy said Tuesday.

“Now we’ve got to map out the next steps,” Handy said. The finalists will be interviewed, but where and when have yet to take shape, he said.

The committee will meet in executive session on Monday and talk about “who these people should meet,” and important things they should see in Lewiston.

Handy said the committee cannot release the names of the finalists, but did confirm there are two. The committee will not release any name until they’ve made someone a job offer and the offer has been accepted, Handy said.

A Sept. 22 story by the Ellsworth American reported that Bill Webster, school superintendent for Ellsworth area schools, is one of the finalists.

Webster told the Ellsworth American he’s happy where he is, “but I find Lewiston a fascinating district. It has Maine’s highest percentage of minority students.”

Handy said the School Committee plans to have a new school boss on board before Superintendent Leon Levesque retires Dec. 31.
