FRYEBURG — Fryeburg Fair officials are excited about the debut of the new educational Garden Center in the Farm Museum complex.

“We don’t do much for gardeners so we decided it was about time we did,” said Fair President Roy Andrews, noting that 43 million Americans have some form of garden.

The 30- by 40-foot area will be anchored by Johnny’s Selected Seeds, The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service and the Western Maine Bee Keepers Association. Western Maine Forest Nursery will also be represented along with area apple orchards.

Lisa Burns of Denmark has been chosen to oversee the center. The owner of Cabins To Castles landscaping brings a lifetime of experience to the job. Featured will be an information desk where fairgoers can find answers to specific gardening questions. Using a high-speed Internet connection, Burns will be able to help folks locate and print out answers to even the most challenging of questions.

“What a great opportunity for people to learn about gardening at Maine largest agricultural fairs,” the new manager said. “We feel we will be able to answer just about any question we’re asked and hope we can be instrumental in the advancement of gardening in the local communities.”

The center will focus on vegetable, flower, organic, ornamental, herbal and fruit tree gardening as well as and beekeeping.

The backdrop of the center is a 21-foot wide photo by Heather Leach of Fryeburg taken in Gary and Melany Libby’s garden in Fryeburg.
