CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The cause of a fire Sunday that heavily damaged two condominiums at Sugarloaf is still under evaluation Monday. The two units received an estimated $250,000 in damages, Fire Chief Courtney Knapp of Carrabassett Valley Fire Department said.

The fire started around a hot tub that was shut down and drained of water in a condominium owned by Linda Gifford of Readfield. All three condos at Commons 2 off Mountainside Road at the intersection with Spruce Creek were empty, he said.

When firefighters got to the scene just before 8:30 a.m., the whole area around the second floor deck was on fire. It broke windows and had extended into the living space on the second floor, he said.

The condo was an end unit, and firefighters were able to stop the fire between the first and second units. The third unit was not damaged. The name of the owner of the second condominium was not available, he said.

“We know where the fire started but not the actual why,” he said. Two State Fire Marshal investigators, Edward Hastings and Kenneth MacMaster, were there Monday morning for an initial evaluation. “It’s not suspicious but accidental.”

The biggest issue for the firefighters was working with a limited force, so five other towns — Eustis, Kingfield, New Portland, Phillips and Strong — were called to help.

“Because we did that, the fire was contained to just two units,” he said.

Firefighters were able to leave the scene about 3:30 p.m. and had their equipment cleaned by early evening.
